Selection
Naming the side
on a Thursday night.
One numbered list, twenty three slots, and a squad named before the last training run.
Where selection lives
ARM has three main screens along the bottom: Roster, Board and Weeks. Selection is the Board.
The board always shows one week and one team. The week is set by the label at the top left, tap it and pick a different one. The teams playing that week sit in a row of tabs underneath, and tapping a tab switches which side you are naming.
The availability link and the game notes are not here. They live on the Weeks screen, which is where a round is created and shared.
What the board is
The board is a single scrolling list of numbered slots, top to bottom. It is not a pool on one side and a team on the other.
Every slot is either filled by a player or shows as Unfilled in grey. For the first fifteen, an unfilled slot also names the position that normally wears that number, so an empty board still reads like a team sheet.
Slots and shirt numbers
Slot order is the shirt number. Slot 1 is your loosehead, slot 15 is your fullback, and you never type a number anywhere.
The position names on empty slots are hints, nothing more. Nothing stops you putting any player in any slot.
Adding players
Tap + Add Players at the bottom. A sheet slides up listing everyone who has not been given a team this week, sorted by what they told you: Available first, then TBC, then anyone who has not answered.
Chips across the top filter that list: All, Available, TBC, Forward, Back. One at a time.
Tap a player and they drop into the next empty slot at the bottom of the list, and the sheet closes. Add them all first, then sort the order out.
A player can only be in one team per week. Anyone already named somewhere does not appear in the sheet at all, so you cannot pick the same player for the 1st XV and the 2nd XV by accident. To move somebody between teams, take them off one and add them to the other.
Reordering and removing
Each filled row has a drag handle on the right. Press and hold it, and the row lifts and follows your finger; let go over the slot you want and everyone else shifts up or down to suit. The handle is the only thing that starts a drag, so you can still scroll the board normally.
Because order is number, dragging your two locks past each other swaps their shirts.
The circle with the cross beside the handle takes a player out of the team completely. They go straight back into the Add Players sheet, still available to pick.
Starters and bench
A dashed line labelled BENCH sits across the list. Everything above it is your starting side, everything below is the bench, numbered on from your last starter. There are eight bench slots.
The line is positional, not a rule. Drag a player across it and they simply become a starter or a replacement, and the numbers follow.
Where the line sits is the starters count for that team, set in team settings. Fifteen by default, and anything from one to twenty two.
The player card
Tap a player's name on the board, not the handle or the cross, and their card opens. It carries what you actually want at selection time:
- Last team and last played. Where they turned out most recently, and when. Both read from your own history, not typed in by anybody.
- Availability. What they said for this week.
- Positions. Their primary position highlighted, secondary positions beside it.
- Coach notes. Yours. Type and it saves itself. Players never see this.
- Selection note. What the player wrote when they answered availability, if they wrote anything. Read only, and it only appears when there is one.
Captain
The captain toggle is at the top of the player card. Turn it on and a purple C appears next to their name on the board straight away.
One captain per team. Naming a new one takes the badge off the old one without you doing anything. It is set per week, so it is a decision about Saturday, not a permanent title, and taking a captain out of the team clears the badge with them.
Team settings
The gear at the top right applies to the team whose tab you are on.
- Team name. Changes the tab label.
- Starters count. Moves the bench line. Lowering it does not remove anybody; the players below the new line simply become bench.
- Show this team. Turn it off for a bye week and the tab disappears. Nothing is deleted, and turning it back on brings the side back exactly as it was.
Saving
There is no save button. Every change writes itself and a small green ✓ Saved flashes at the top.
If a change cannot be saved, usually because the phone lost signal, the board puts itself back the way it was and shows Save failed. Nothing is left half done. Get signal back and make the change again.
When it goes wrong
A player is not in the Add Players sheet. They are already in another team this week, or a filter chip is on, or they are archived. Check the chip first, it is usually the chip.
The numbers are wrong. Numbers are slot order. Drag the rows into the order you want and the numbers follow.
No coloured dot next to a player. Green means Available and amber means TBC. No dot means they have not answered this week, which is a chase, not a bug.
A team tab is missing. It has been hidden for this week. Open team settings and turn Show this team back on.
Somebody pulls out on Friday. Change the board, not the week. Take them off, add the replacement, and everything downstream updates.
Two coaches picking at once. Every change saves immediately and the last one wins. If two of you pick the same team, agree who drives.
Good habits
- Add everybody first, order them second. Fighting the order while you are still picking is the slow way round.
- Pick from what is on the grid, not from memory. That is what chasing answers is for.
- Hide teams that have a bye rather than leaving an empty tab that looks like an unpicked side.
- Write coach notes in the moment you have the thought. Nobody but you ever reads them.
- Name the side on Thursday. Players train better when they know.
